Rare rescue of Aurora IL Squirrel

Aurora IL rare squirrel rescue-
Many Aurora squirrel removal calls come in 2 bursts a year. Once through Feb-March and once through June-Aug. The reason for the burst in activity is Aurora problem squirrels are grey and fox squirrels, which to many peoples surprise have 2 litters of young per year. We had an Aurora squirrel removal request very recently that produced a very rare black phase baby grey squirrel.
The baby squirrel along with a regular color phased litter mate were stuck on an Aurora IL roof after the mother squirrel was struck and killed on the road. The Aurora resident called U.S. Wildlife Removal Service to rescue the squirrels when she noticed the mother squirrel not returning and the babys running all over the Aurora home, however not able to make it down. The days were hot and the black roof was no place to be with out food or especially water. U.S. Wildlife had a truck sent out to aid the squirrels right away and set up traps for squirrel capture and rescue. The first night the baby grey colored squirrel was caught but not the baby black squirrel! Water dishes were placed, as well as hydrating food like apples on the roof and squirrel traps on the Aurora IL home were rebaited. The days counted down and the black baby squirrels fate did not look too good, as he wasn’t caught yet and hadn’t been seen anywhere in days. Then the Aurora resident called 3 days later with excitement “we got him!” We headed out immediately to get the baby squirrel off the roof before suffering heat exhaustion from exposure. The squirrel was observed by a wildlife rehabilitator and released when fully ready to fend for himself on his own. U.S. Wildlife was proud to remove the baby black Aurora squirrel from the roof and get him to a more natural setting.

Marinating cat gets new home, and it's not in someones stomach!

What seemed to be a normal traffic stop for running a stop sign turned into an animal cruelty case, last Sunday August 8, 2010, when Buffalo NY police officers heard crying coming from the trunk of the stopped car.
Upon opening the trunk a live cat was marinating in a mixture of oil, salt, chili pepper and crushed red pepper.
Korkuck (51), a Cheektowaga resident, had adopted the feline 3 months prior to this incident. His reasoning for the incident was the animals ill tempered, wasteful and greedy attitude. Also claiming "It got pregnant after being spayed", despite the fact Navarro was a neutered male cat. So he planned on eating it.
He was charged with 1 count of animal cruelty.
The cat is now all cleaned up, after 2 baths and adopted into a loving home on Tuesday. His new owner says "I got him home now and he's just looking and exploring like crazy. He's really passive and not aggressive at all."
Navarro has also received something else with his new home, a new name. He now goes by the name of Oliver.

Sunday Coopers Hawk Rescue

8/3/2010

Lemont IL- Sunday afternoon a Coopers hawk was found under a Lemont residents porch. After placing the hawk on a bird bath for observation, the hawk sat for several hours unable to fly for an unknown reason. The resident decided to call professional help and contacted U.S. Wildlife to aid in the rehabilitation of the injured bird of prey. U.S. Wildlife was on the scene within hours on a Sunday evening and removed the bird the be housed overnight and brought to Willowbrook Wildlife Center the following morning free of charge.

"Given the nature of this type of hawk, they are the top gun pilots of the raptor family. They like to fly really low and high speeds and come up over obstructions to surprise prey. He must have been going a little too fast and had a crash landing under the deck."
- Mario Jr. U.S. Wildlife Operations Manager.

The hawks condition is still pending and awaiting an evaluation by Williowbrook Wildlife center. A wildlife rehabilitation center operated by the DuPage Forest Preserve.
